Le Haut-Médoc de Haut-Bages Libéral 2016

A beautiful wine from a historic estate in Pauillac, this 2016 vintage is a fine example of the sophistication of Haut-Médoc wines. With Claire Villars-Lurton at the helm, this wine offers a perfect balance of dark fruits, oak, and firm tannins, providing depth and complexity. Expect a long, smooth finish that pairs well with red meats, game, and mature cheeses.

Les Calèches de Lanessan 2015

This second wine of Château Lanessan delivers exceptional value for a wine of its pedigree. From the 2015 vintage, known for its warmth and ripeness, this wine is rich with notes of blackcurrant, spice, and a touch of leather. It is softer and more approachable in its youth than the grand vin, making it an excellent choice for anyone wanting to experience Bordeaux without the need for extended cellaring.

At the tasting, you’ll have the chance to explore the distinct personalities of these two wines. The tasting will take place between 11am and 4pm on Saturday, 12th October, at Tetbury Wines. Whether you are a Bordeaux enthusiast or just starting your wine journey, this event is open to all.

It was a cheeky pun seems we struck the right note. We were especially delighted when the festival’s guest judge, Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen, stopped by to take a closer look. Known for his flair and eye for design, Lawrence gave our window an approving nod—particularly enjoying our flute pun! The Tetbury Music Festival is always a highlight of the year, and we’re proud to have been part of this creative celebration of music and community.

1. Chateau Haut-Rian, Entre-Deux-Mers

Our first wine is a blend of 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. This refreshing white has aromas of white flowers and lemon.

2. Chateau Moulin de Mallet

The first of our five red wines is an 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc blend with black fruit aromas and a palate of mulberry and plum supported by soft tannins.

3. Chateau Le Bedat, Bordeaux Superieur

Combing the three most popular grapes of the region (75% Merlot, 15%Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon), this wine is driven by juicy fruit and has spicy undertones.

4. Chateau Haut-Rian 1er Cotes de Bordeaux, Cadillac

This 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc blend is a “mouthful of fresh red fruits.”

5. Vieux Chateau Bayard, Montagne St Emillon

This 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon blend has lots of juicy fruit initially then chewy tannins; often described as “a wine of two halves.”

6. Chateau des Pelerins, Pomerol

Another blend of the three famous grapes at 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, this Pomerol has aromas of chocolate and plums with velvet tannins.

7. Chateau Jany, Sauternes

Our final wine is a pudding wine made from Semillon grapes and has lemon and grapefruit on the nose then flavours of apricot and mango.

Wine tasting will be available from 10am to 5pm at our shop on Church Street.

Since opening, our shop on Church Street has become a destination for wine enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike. We have curated an exceptional selection of wines from around the world, offering everything from local favorites to rare finds. Our staff has been dedicated to helping you discover the perfect bottle for every occasion, whether it's a cosy night in or a festive gathering with friends.

Tetbury Wines started in 2020 but last year’s opening of the shop saw us really grow and our team expanded to include our delivery driver Scott, and Kathryn who works in the shop two days a week and helps with our marketing. The shop has provided us a venue for wine tasting events with our Christmas tasting being especially well attended.

To celebrate, we’re opening some champagne on Saturday, 7th September. We are incredibly grateful for the warm welcome we have received over the past year, and we can’t wait to toast to the future with our wine club members.

However, our focus is always on the future and we have tastings for Bordeaux Month (21st of September), Wines of the Haut-Medoc (12th of October), Rioja Month (23rd November) and this year’s Christmas tasting (28th November).

- 1er Cotes de Bordeaux: Known for their elegance and finesse, these wines are crafted from grapes grown in some of the region's finest vineyards.

- Graves: Our Chateau Respide Reserve 2017 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes and considered a ripe vintage that pairs well with red meat, game and mature cheeses.

- Haut-Medoc: Renowned for its prestigious châteaux, Haut-Medoc produces some of the most iconic red wines, characterized by depth, structure, and aging potential. We stock magnums, double magnums and imperials as well as standard bottles for these fine wines.

- St-Estèphe, St-Julien, Margaux, and Pauillac: These appellations are the crown jewels of Bordeaux, each offering unique terroirs and styles. Expect full-bodied reds with complex layers of flavour and the ability to age beautifully.

- St-Emilion, Lalande de Pomerol and Pomerol: Known for their Merlot dominance, these wines are typically softer and fruitier, making them incredibly approachable and food-friendly.

- White Bordeaux: Refreshing and vibrant, these wines often blend Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, delivering crisp acidity and delightful citrus notes.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, cigars became a symbol of luxury and sophistication. They were often associated with the elite and wealthy classes, especially in places like Cuba, which became renowned for its high-quality cigar production. The introduction of mechanised production in the late 19th century made cigars more accessible to the masses, yet they retained their celebratory connotation, often being smoked during significant life events such as weddings, births, and promotions.

Tetbury Wines Training

On Wednesday, August 22nd, Tetbury Wines held a staff training session with Patrick from Hunters & Frankau focused on our range of homemade cigars and their new humidor. Proper humidity and temperature control are crucial for maintaining the flavour and integrity of cigars and while ours call the humidor home, each of our cigars is sold in a cedar-lined case to ensure it stays in perfect condition until you are ready to smoke it.

Following our training, Tetbury Wines now sells Havana and other fine cigars. Our Havana cigars come from the Pinar del Rio region to the west of Havana and as a Product of Designated Origin (PDO) the leaves in their production is grown from the Tabasco Negro Cubano seed and are grown through two processes known as shade-grown and sun-grown. Whether you choose Havana or one of our other fine cigars, our entire range is handmade, ensuring a quality that compliments that of our wines.

Chateau Musar was founded by Gaston Hochar, whose vision was to produce wines that reflected the unique terroir of Lebanon. The estate's vineyards are situated at an altitude of 1,000 metres, benefiting from a climate that combines Mediterranean warmth with cooler mountain influences. The philosophy at Chateau Musar emphasises minimal intervention in the winemaking process. Grapes are harvested by hand and the wines are fermented using natural yeasts, which helps to preserve the authentic flavours and characteristics of the region. The 2017 vintage is a testament to this philosophy, showcasing the rich, complex flavours that have made Château Musar a household name among wine enthusiasts.

The 2017 vintage of Chateau Musar is a true expression of the vineyard's heritage and the exceptional terroir of the Bekaa Valley. This vintage is characterised by its deep, ruby colour and an aromatic profile that captivates the senses. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault, it has notes of ripe dark fruits, spices, and hints of oak, it offers a rich and full-bodied experience that is both elegant and powerful. On the palate, the wine reveals layers of complexity, with flavours of blackcurrant, plum, and subtle earthy undertones. The well-structured tannins and balanced acidity contribute to a long, satisfying finish, making it a perfect companion for hearty dishes or a delightful experience on its own.

A fascinating grape

Riesling is grown on every continent except Antarctica but 40% is produced in Germany, mostly along the Rhine River. It has an official Birthday of 13th March 1435 due to the cellar logs of Count Katzenelnbogen which records Klaus Kleinfish purchasing six Riesling vines. Those who love it really do and our promotional price for July for Fritz Willi put a smile on the face of its fans.

We had tastings each Saturday and while the people most interested in trying some already appreciated Riesling, it was almost unanimously agreed that our selection reflected some rather lovely wines.

Where are we heading after England and Germany?

In August we are running our Cycles Gladiator competition but September is Bordeaux Wine Month and we are heading a little further South to the second largest wine-producing area in France, Bordeaux.

A very special guest

Tetbury Wines hosted the tasting and featured the wines from Avondale Wines, one of the world’s leading biodynamic wine producers. Speaking from his farm in Paarl, South Africa, Avondale owner Johnathan Grieve joined the group virtually to talk everyone through his wines and philosophy. His passion for their wine making principles employed in both the vineyard and winery left many present adding Avondale to the top of their bucket list of wineries to visit.

Jonty’s Ducks

One of the popular wines was the Pekin White from Avondale’s, Jonty’s Ducks range. The ducks are the “Guardians of the vines” and their patrols keep snails under control as one of the ways the vineyard stays nature friendly. The wine itself fully embodies Avondale’s ethos, “Terra Est Vita” – Soil is Life as an elegant, slow made wine.

Competition Details

From the 1st to the 31st of August, we invite individuals to celebrate the fusion of art, wine, and the freedom that bicycles have historically symbolised by collecting photos of cyclists with their bikes and the Cycles Gladiator Wine. Selfie frames will be located at Tetbury Wines and Veloton Cycle (22 Market Place, Tetbury) and can be used to help capture you, your bike and the wine.

To enter, simply upload your photo to instagram and tag @tetburywines. By entering the competition, participants grant Tetbury Wines permission to use their photographs for promotional purposes. The competition is open to anyone over 18 years old, irrespective of artistic experience or cycling expertise.

The winner of the Cycles Gladiator Wine Competition will be selected at random. The winner will receive £200 worth of wine.
